The Pond That Was

I've been outside watching the birds and looking at a big black-filled place in my backyard where my wonderful pond was filled in yesterday. I enjoyed the fish and frogs, the waterlilies and lotus, and just listening to the waterfall. But it was really too much for me. The heron ate the fish, the frogs went away (???), I didn't get the flowers out and into the garage in time and they died from the cold, and the string algae the last two summers made daily cleaning of the skimmer necessary. I had to fight the HOA to get permission to build it, and spent a small fortune on it, but everything changes. Thank goodness for photographs...here's one I came across this morning...maybe I'll get the HD with more out and post more later.

I'm sure you'll miss the wildlife you attracted to the pond, but look at the bright side; there are plenty of natural bodies of water that attract wildlife.

Right you are - and close to me too - but that was so convenient.

First of all I love the picture. I love ponds too! But as I get older I realize some things have to change for various reasons, and with change something else even more wonderful comes into our lives. Keep looking and I know you will see that 'something wonderful'.

Lovely shots. You can tell that Bluebird wants to nest there :-)

Hi Nick. I guess he did! There are some very vocal chicks in there - wish I could see them. Hope you're all better.

My...it certainly was beautiful!!! BTW...did you get any great Heron pics while they were stealing your fish?? haha

As a matter of fact, I did! Well not while he had the fish in his mouth, but sitting on a branch casing out the pond. I had up a "no fishing" sign, too. The pond was lovely, and I was really lucky to be able to enjoy it for 5 summers. Thanks.

What an amazing story about the bluebirds--they are so sweet. Maybe some day we'll move so we can feed the birds in the backyard again, but for now I am enjoying seeing yours and your adventures with them.

Thank you - I'm so happy to share my lovely little friends - and so appreciative to all of you who look at them. My wild bird store is actually what I call my "retirement adventure." I had a new customer in a couple of weeks ago and he asked about bluebirds. Well, that sets me off every time, and after I finished praising the wonders of birds in general and bluebirds in particular, he said with a twinkle, "Helen, I think you need to find something to do that you are passionate about. lol
I am so grateful to my husband who has so graciously supported this venture, and to my wonderful customers, who have become my friends.
