Dear Helen,

Loaded weapons in our National Parks?

It's already passed in the Senate.

Your action is needed today to keep our parks safe.

This week, the U.S. House of Representatives may vote on a bill of great concern to those who cherish our national parks and the wildlife they host.

Believe it or not, we're talking about the Credit Cardholders' Bill of Rights Act. What does credit reform have to do with national parks? Nothing. Yet, astonishingly, Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., has attached a rider to the bill that would allow individuals to carry loaded weapons in national parks. Take action now.

If the bill passes with the rider attached, anyone would be allowed to carry loaded weapons – including semi-automatics – in our national parks.

Can you imagine the implications for wildlife poaching and visitor safety?

Not only is this a dangerous idea but it makes no sense attaching it to a bill that seeks to help Americans in difficult times.

This bill passed the Senate last week. It's now up to us to stop the rider – take action now.

The gun effort has been widely opposed by park rangers and seven former directors of the Park Service who say it would increase the risk of poaching and vandalism of historic resources and put visitors at risk.

Please tell your Representative to stop this ill-conceived idea and to keep our beloved parks free of loaded weapons.

Sincerely,

Kathy Kilmer
The Wilderness Society

It's awful. I have already written my Senators and Representative. Half our county is national or state forest. What a nightmare to think that people there might be carrying weapons.

What a crazy idea!
I can't see any worthwhile reason for it.

Ah---just another STUPID mistake from our Congress. I don't care if one is a Republican or a Democrat, it's all about politics. They are ALL nuts. We desperately need term limits and we need to get new blood in the Congress. All they care about is doing whatever they need to do to get reelected. They are not listening to US. the American people.

And---that is the way they 'buy' votes. "I'll vote for YOUR bill--credit card reform--if you'll put mine in there as a rider --guns allowed in Nat. Parks."

It just stinks---like most everything else coming out of Congress.

Just my Humble Opinion!!!! ha
Hugs,
Betsy

The bill passed. First, the delinquent mortgage holders are bailed out by those that are responsible. Now, those that pay their monthly credit card bills will be faced with paying a yearly fee to make up for those that continually charge. And, to top it off, they add the concealed weapons allowance into national parks to the credit card bill. I'm not usually a negative poster but things do not appear to be heading in the right direction.
